Science Breakthrough – “Interconnected Carbon Nanosheets Derived from HEMP for Ultrafast Supercapacitors with High Energy”

 

Scientists in Canada have created a breakthrough material that has major promise for future Green-Tech projects – “Interconnected Carbon Nanosheets Derived from Hemp for Ultrafast Supercapacitors with High Energy” as ACS NANO titled their article posted on May 7, 2013 – Read HERE . This technology will most likely be used to produce high-performance energy devices that will power future technology and could be used in Cars, Buses, Trains, and other critical high energy systems. In regards to Vehicle use, if you look at where Lithium Ion Batteries are headed you will see that graphene is key to the future of batteries as we know it.  We’re talking energy storage that’s 100’s to 1000’s of times denser than current storage technology.  Cars would not only be able to drive longer on a single charge, they would also charge in minutes rather than hours.  This is the future my friends…and Hemp is helping to make it happen!

“Researchers in Canada have now reported (“Interconnected Carbon Nanosheets Derived from Hemp for Ultrafast Supercapacitors with High Energy”) the successful hydrothermal-based synthesis of two-dimensional, yet interconnected, carbon nanosheets with superior electrochemical storage properties comparable to those of state-of-the-art graphene-based electrodes.

“We were able to achieve this by employing a biomass precursor with a unique structure – hemp bast fiber,” Zhi Li, a post doc researcher in David Mitlin’s group at the University of Alberta, tells Nanowerk. “The resultant graphene-like nanosheets possess fundamentally different properties (pore size distribution, physical interconnectedness and electrical conductivity) as compared to conventional biomass-derived activated carbons.””
